Hot Jam & Balboa Atlanta are proud to present JAMMY JAM! We have put together some of the best instructors in Atlanta to teach you how to level up your Jam Circle Skillz!

The Jam Circle and how to jam in it. That is the focus of this workshop.

The jam circle is an essential part of our dance community and part of the African heritage at the roots of Lindy Hop and the Swing Era dances. It builds camaraderie as we pour energy into the center supporting and inspiring whoever is there, and the people in the center inspire the onlookers. The Jam is where the music got created. The Jam is where the dancers explored. The Jam is where the dancer and musician formed a bond or were same person. The Jam is where the art grows and explores. Unfortunately, a lot of people are terrified of joining in the jam circle. This workshop is meant to make you feel welcomed there. The Jam is not where you go to be perfect; it is a space where you can experiment and explore and live your truth. The Jam is where you discover yourself.

If you attended the air steps (aerials) workshop in January, this is a great opportunity to practice your aerials. We will also go over basic air steps (aerials) such as the A-frame and frog jump.

We will be focusing on:

Connection skills
Timing
Rhythm
Transitions
Aerials
Fast Lindy, Balboa & Bal-Swing

TEACHER INFO.

RACHEL PITNER
Rachel Pitner has been dancing all of her life. From dancing down the aisles at the grocery store to performing on stage and everywhere in between. Rachel’s life is full of movement and exploring connections. She has performed around the country as a cast member of SW!NG OUT and in other productions including the Disney movie the Haunted Mansion. Rachel has a degree in dance with a focus in Graham-style modern from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. Rachel loves dancing, and she loves nurturing her dance community. You can often find her organizing or supporting fellow organizers throughout the Southeast and at various events, but especially at Hot Jam and Atlanta Varsity Showdown (the hometown events that she runs). Rachel loves the personal growth and the exchange of ideas that occurs with partner dancing and the freedom and energy of Lindy Hop and the flow of solo dancing. You’ll often see her dancing to the music in her head.

JAMICA ZION:
Jamaica Zion a Denver native and Atlanta transplant, Jamica started to dance seriously at the age of 15. She focuses on Black American vernacular dances of the 20th century, both partnered and solo! Her specialties are the idioms within the blues and jazz umbrellas, followed by the variety of fabulous dances from the 1970s. In the ten+ years of her professional dancing she has traveled to learn, perform, teach, and compete throughout the US and has regularly placed in the top three at the most prominent events in the country.
